Telling Time in German: Wie Spät Ist Es?

We already covered the days of the week back in Lesson 3 — now let's handle the other half of "when": the actual clock. Fair warning, this is one of those topics where German logic doesn't quite match English logic, especially around the half-hour. Stick with it, though, it clicks faster than it seems at first.

Saying the Time

Wie spät ist es? What time is it?

Es ist zwei Uhr. It's two o'clock.

Es ist Viertel nach drei. It's quarter past three.

Es ist halb drei. It's half past two.

That last one trips up basically every beginner, so let's be extra clear about it: halb drei does not mean "half past three." It means "halfway to three" — so it's actually 2:30. English counts back from the hour that just passed; German counts forward to the next one. Once that flips in your head, the rest of the system falls into place.

Honestly, the fastest fix: next time you check your phone for the time, silently say it in German first before reading it in numbers. It forces your brain to do the "halb" conversion in real time, which is exactly the muscle you need to build.
